This review features a 6yo Tamdhu 2004/2011 from Dutch Independent bottler Van Wees (the Ultimate). With an appealing old-school label and a more than generous price tag: what's not to like? Maybe the whisky is a bit youngish, but with the NAS whiskies flooding the market these days a bottle that's a bit on the young side should no longer scare anyone. Besides it has been bottled at a whopping cask strength of 60.2%.
Description: golden grain colour, nice long legs in the glass, matured in a 1st fill Sherry butt (#5440), bottled at 60.2 % ABV
Nose: strong notes of sherry(obviously) with hints of hand soap and soft fudge. However its character comes from the strong aroma of cloves and laurel leaves. I fail to detect any of the "obvious" fruity notes as suggested by other reviews (with water added: scents of wood shavings are added into the mix)
Mouth: A thick and oily body, with an alcoholic bite on the palate (watch out it may paralyze your tongue). The warm burn is followed by a thick layers of marmalade with a slight hint of leather. (with water added: adds finesse to the palate, an elegant version of the previous dram with the addition of a touch of liquorice: much more enjoyable)
The Verdict:A true sherry monster with some rough edges. Don't expect great depth or rich diversity in its composition, this is a monolithic whisky. The nose was not overly expressive, but the mouth makes up for that. And for the meager price of just €42, this is an absolute must have by my book. As for the addition of water, try it neat first just to feel the raw power radiating from the palate. But add a fair dash of water to enjoy its full potential
